Bus lane refunds to begin this week

First published in News

MOTORISTS fined for using Colchester’s town centre bus lanes will begin to be repaid this week.

Last month, Essex County Council rescinded more than 30,000 tickets given to drivers caught using new bus lanes in Colchester town centre.

The decision followed an online uproar from motorists who did not realise the lanes, part of a wider town centre trial which was scrapped in April, had been reinstated six months later.

Last week, the council was heavily criticised because no drivers had been repayed one month after the announcement, on January 8.

But today, Essex County Council confirmed letters will be sent to residents who were fined, detailing how they will be refunded.

A spokesman said: “Letters will be sent to residents this week who are entitled to receive a refund.

“Repayments will also be sent from this week in a phased approach depending on the payment method - online, cheque or cash.”

Well it's been well over two weeks since i was promised a refund, the £30 I was expecting shall be increased to £90, failure to provide the funds immediately shall incur a county court summons & a threat of a visit from the bailiffs.

I still don't understand why the refunds are being made. If people can't read road signs or know the Highway Code they shouldn't be driving.

I didn't have a problem reading the signs and abiding by the rules of the Highway Code

This money belongs to the people and I object to it being given back to idiots who took a chance they wouldn't be caught. If they truly did not see all the signs, then they are not fit to be driving on our roads. We are talking about a million pounds here. No small sum and a sum that would go a long way to repairing potholed roads. The lunatics are running the asylum in Chelmsford. I vote for Colchester as a unitary council.

The issue was that essex county council did not follow correct procedure,i never got a ticket but did drive through not realising a bus lane was in place, the signs were unclear and illegal.
Essex county council would have faced numerous legal challenges which would have cost the tax payer dearly.
The signs are now up in the correct manner and anyone breaking the law now deserves to be fined.

Good! I love using the bus lanes (the ones without cameras of course).

Why should poor people get to work quicker than me in my Porsche?
