Sir Bob questions Gove on education proposals

Gazette: Sir Bob questions Gove on education proposals Sir Bob questions Gove on education proposals

COLCHESTER MP Sir Bob Russell has challenged Education Secretary Michael Gove over his plans to extend the length of the school day.

Sir Bob spoke during education questions in parliament on Monday *10FEB*.

He said: “On the basis that there is more to education than the classroom, will the Secretary of State tell the House what discussions he has had with various organisations - scouts, guides, cadets and so on - on how a longer school day would impact on the out-of-school activities that our young people undertake?”

Mr Gove responded: “I would hope that our voluntary organisations would play a part in making sure that more young people can enjoy the sort of character-building activities that those organisations believe in.

“Many scout troops already work closely with schools, and it is certainly the case that cadets are an integral part of the success of schools in the independent and state sectors.

“I want to do everything possible to ensure that children can enjoy those activities, and, in particular, that children from disadvantaged backgrounds, who have not had the chance in the past, now have that opportunity.”

Having moved to mile end I called the local rainbows to see if my 6 yr old could join. I was advised that the waiting lists were so long there is no way she could possibly join and it is even unlikely she could join brownies when she comes of age. :-(

Why not enrol her with Beaver Scouts instead?

I cannot fathom where Sir Robert is going on this?
I was a Flight Sergeant in the Local Air Training Corps in the 70's: We had a championship winning military band. we nearly always headed the carnivals and parades.
We had so many contest winning silver trophies that they had to be locked and stored in the local Police station.
Even the Royal Marines and other Army bands recognised the quality of our competency.
Some of the attendance including Squadron nights reached 5 to 6 sessions per week not including band functions and jobs at weekends.
The band was so professional that it was asked to do closing down ceremonies at RAF Debden in front of Sir Douglas Bader.
We got no kudos or respect from the educational establishment, apart from those teachers that served during world war 2 during front line action.
Four teachers at my school of Wilson Marriage were Pilots or Aircrew including one Royal Marine Commando Warrant Officer.
I am beginning to understand Gove. I hated him at first and did so for some time, however the light is appearing at the end of a very long dark tunnel and I can see that Gove & Willets are very clever people indeed.
leaving the Tory party aside, even though I an not a Conservative, you have to admit they are doing a very good job.
The Nanny State left wing get away with murder politics of labour, has been thrown out and in has come the Blue Bloods who have come down hard on the lackadaisical New Labour way of letting all and sundry sit back and do nothing.
Lets face it if Labour was still in, the Colchester Hospital stuff would have carried on, mired in a quagmire of indifference and self protectionism, which is where it came from?
It happened before Labour ballsed everything up, the Tories came in with Thatcher then the brilliant John Major and with him put the country in an amazing position.
Blair & Brown went and messed it up even though they were given over 15 years of chances.
The Education system does not like Gove and I now understand why, he is dishing out medicine that the Lefties and closet Red Brigade do not want or like?
There are enough of them in this town, by the way.
You only have to go to North Hill every time there is a strike or dispute, they are the first to get their photo in the paper, or bemoan the failings of which they basically create.
The after school clubs and associations will go on, because they are backed up with backbone and gumption in organisations and funding by people who care.
I think this is the message that GOVE is trying to advocate and put over to us.
Sir Robert "Old Bob, has always said that his dream in life, is to learn to play the B Flat Bugle at Last Post, I know this because he has told many of my Colcestrian comrades and chums over the years.
I have played Last Post with 50 odd Buglers and I can tell you that a memory akin to that is better than any I have experienced in the whole of my time.
You will not get any cooperation from the establishment via the rank and file of grass roots education employees, to achieve what GOVE is trying to encourage and advocate, because most of them, NOT ALL, but most of them, are from Middle to Lower middle class families, mummies children that have done nothing with their lives, apart from be in education, then go to higher education, then take a gap year messing around in thailand or australia, drinking taking drugs and having s*x, then they go back to education, an I Tablet Ethos in a sterile existence!
In other words their lives are from school and they go back to school. The only work experience they have is a part time toil in CostaBucks.
GOVE & WILLETS have their work cut out if they think they can make a dent in the Recalcitrant and belligerent Union backed ethos and mentality of the past 18 Years.
To be honest this stuff and attitude, went on way back in the 70's I never once heard a teacher thank me for not misspending my youth and proudly representing the community in the A.T.C.
I would have got more respect, in smashing in windows and being a nuisance in The System.
They say the system only oils the noisy cogs in the mechanism of how it works.
The unsung heroes of after school organizations will always be an unsung labour of love, because those that are not involved are lazy and jealous of the work that these volunteers go through.
I tell you spending 3 hours bulling shoes to mirror finish all over and underneath, then doing your uniform with razor line creases in your trousers, plus the 3/6/9 inch creases in the back of a Battle Dress tunic, along with doing brasses and
blanko-ing gaiters was not much fun?
Sir Bob needs to make the argument more clear. please don't just bat GOVE down for the sake of it?

A Very Private Gentleman I'm not sure how you can say the Tory's are doing a good job, with 25% youth unemployment, the removal of many employment rights. health care in crisis due to funding cuts and still we spend billions on defence and fail to tackle subject like bankers bonus's, but I'm sure that most of the wont affect you.

The education policy government has abandoned a whole generation based on the experiences of four boys who went to a public school (Cameron, Clegg, Osborn and Gove) none of whom have any experience of working with young people or in the education sector.

Just to put the record straight this county was ballsed up by the but the labour govts. of the 1970s but it was ******* over by Thatcher and her cronies- and then her sterling work of ******us over was carried in by Blair, Brown and now Cameron and his rich boys club

Colchester castle and beaver scouts thank you so much. Contacted beaver scouts looks promising for her to join after may, which is one way of getting her involved in the local community-if only she could attend a local school now. Thankfully SIr Bob is trying to help with this. I support SIr Bobs Strep B swab campaign and I for one am glad to have an Mp that supports all different people and campaigns rather than just a select few.
