THE acorn of an idea to offer free trees to Colchester residents has grown into a project of oak tree proportions.

A total of 2,014 trees, shrubs and fruit bushes were handed to residents, community groups and schools.

Colchester Council’s free Trees for Years giveaway is in its eighth year.

Species ranged from raspberry canes to gooseberry bushes, silver birches and red and yellow stem dogwood.

Bob Penny, the council's community development manager, said: “Having more trees in Colchester will improve air quality, attract birds, bees and butterflies and means residents can pick their own fruit.”

The event was funded by stationery supplies firm Office/s.
