Community centre and church to rise from ashes

Gazette: Community centre and church to rise from ashes Community centre and church to rise from ashes

THE remains of Colchester’s fire-hit former garrison gym could be restored to create a new church and community centre.

The 152-year-old building, on Circular Road South, was devastated by an inferno started in the early hours of June 21 last year.

At the time, Abbeyfields Community Church had been working for two years on plans to convert the derelict building into a community centre and church base.

The blaze left their plans in tatters, but now site owner Colchester Council has revealed it is looking to either create an entirely new building or renovate the gym using its still intact shell.

Hmmm, my money is on an entirely new building. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Church and Community Centre plans fall through and a load more flats to go up to be honest.

How many suspicious fires have there been on potential development sites in Colchester in the last decade?

The building was insured so it should be rebuilt. A church **** community centre would be great for the area. Perhaps a bit of space for a military museum.

Before the fire this building was sold off to become a church? Now the owners are us? How come? Surely we should be told.

this is great news. and finally they are listening to local opinions. There are a number of groups that need a large facility like this as a community hall and i know it will be well used

The former gymnasium along with the medical centre next door were both given to the council by the MOD as part of the various deals done when the new garrison was built.
