A researcher is appealing for help tracing pictures taken by a famous Brightlingsea photographer who documented London life in the early 1900s.

Vicky Stewart is working on a project which will see an exhibition of Charles Arthur Mathew’s work displayed at the Bishopgate Institute in London in March.

It will feature a set of street photographs he took in Spitalfields, London, in 1912.

The photographer lived with his wife Ellen in Tower Rd , Brightlingsea, and worked not far away at his studio, 33 Tower Rd.

He started professional photography after 1901 and continued after moving from Brightlingsea in 1918, until his death in 1923.

They had no children.

Ms Stewart said: “Judging by the Spitalfields photographs his work was high quality.

“He also supplied two photographs for the 1913 book 'A History of the Town of Brightlingsea', a beautiful book fetching high prices today.

“In the 20 years as photographer his output must have been considerable.

“Should anybody have any information, or photos signed by C A Mathew, I would be delighted to hear from you.

“He deserves to be remembered.”
