New brochure to show what's on in Colchester

First published in News

A NEW brochure of events going on in Colchester in 2014 has been published.

The Visit Colchester booklet, part of Destination Colchester’s festivals project, includes information on the Roman River Music festival and the second Colchester Comedy Festival.

It is the first time a set of different events have been promoted together.

The brochure was put together by Colchester Council, Colchester School of Art and Destination Colchester.

Simon Taylor, of Destination Colchester, said: “The project is intended to build on all the exciting events that are on in the Colchester area by encouraging and helping organisers to plan ahead and work together.”

Tim Young, councillor responsible for culture, said: “The town has some great events planned for 2014, including the popular comedy festival.”

The aim is to set up a year-long programme of events and help Colchester to apply to be a future City of Culture.

Just to clarify: this is a page within the Council's official tourism guide, rather than a separate publication. Many towns that Colchester competes with for tourists include a festivals listing within their brochures, so we think this is a useful addition.

Good idea.

I'd like to see a monthly guide to music & arts/what's going on produced, like Leeds has with Cops & Robbers and London with roughly 100 different free guides, so I could see what's on over a month. I feel like I keep missing things or finding out about things I'd want to see on the day a lot recently. Keep Colchester Cool do a great job, but they publish the day's listings on the day itself. Might look into this actually; Colchester has lots of interesting things happening, but it's hard to find out exactly what those things are.

Then you have no idea of what actually happens in Colchester. There is lots of entertainment, comedy, gigs plays etc every week. Just have a look at the Arts Centre, Mercury, Bull or Hole in the Wall.

The free magazines mostly have listings for the coming month. The Gazette lists things on the entertainments page(s).
It should be easy to get on the mailing (or e-mailing) lists of the places you like going to. I think I get these from about a dozen venues and so I don't miss much.

Yes, there are plenty of monthly listings available for locals, with more planned, and Keep Colchester Cool does a great job with short notice listings. The objective here was to link up events and festivals throughout the year and use them to promote Colchester to visitors from outside the area.
