A KWIKFIT fitter aims to show you can't get quicker as he is pulling on his trainers to raise money for a special fund.

Daniel Waters works as a master fitter at Kwikfit in Barrack Street, Colchester, and he is in training to take part in the Colchester half marathon.

Daniel wants to raise money to bring a smile to the children at Lexden Springs Special School in Colchester - including his cousin, Mollie Hagon.

Mollie, who is five, was born ten weeks prematurely, weighing just two pounds five ounces.

Her mother, Elizabeth, said: "We lost Mollie three times. She was very poorly."

Mollie was rushed to a special baby unit in Luton where she stayed for a week before going to the special care baby unit in Colchester for six weeks.

She was later diagnosed as having cerebral palsy and Elizabeth was told Mollie would never walk or talk.

She said: "She can walk short distances now although she gets stiff.

"She cannot walk but is learning sign language."

Mollie can play on traditonal play equipment but is reticent about getting involved.

However, the school hopes to build its own play area which would encourage the students to integrate socially as well as help improve their stamina and balance.

The 100,000 Smiles appeal, which is supported by the Gazette, aims to raise £100,000 to pay for the play area.

It has been given a boost by Daniel.

The 23,-year-old, who lives in Stanway, said: "I have not put my running shoes on since I was at the Gilberd when I was 15.

"I have been going to the gym and I am building myself up ten minutes at a time.

"I am hoping I will raise £500 although I would like to raise even more if possible."

Anyone wanting to sponsor Daniel can go to his justgiving page at www.justgiving.com/daniel-waters1 or text XDAN95 and the amount to 70070.
