GIANT yellow statues depicting people suffering from different ailments have been causing a stir in Colchester town centre.

They were part of a campaign encouraging people to choose the right place to seek care.

Managers at North East Essex Clinical Commissioning Group want to stop people clogging up accident and emergency departments.

Instead, sick patients are urged to call the non-emergency 111 number or visit pharmacies, out-of-hours GP surgeries and walk-in health clinics.

Health advisers were on hand to explain to passers-by in Lion Walk what each ailment was being depicted by the statues and where the most appropriate place was for treatment.

Dr Shane Gordon, the group’s clinical chief officer, said: “We have been giving people leaflets explaining where they can go to get help most efficiently, conveniently and quickly.

“Reactions to the sculptures have ranged from amusement, especially at the statue sitting on the toilet, to curiosity.

“It is better for patients not to have to wait for four hours in A&E if they are not seriously ill, but also for hospitals.

“The new 111 service is available 24/7 and will help and advise people where to get the best and most appropriate medical treatment.”
