Fourth solar farm plan too much for village - claim
6:00am Monday 13th January 2014 in News
ALLOWING a fourth “solar farm” near Wixwould be a “step too far”, the area’s district councillor has said.
Matthew Patten, who represents Bradfield, Wix and Wrabness, has voiced concerns about plans to site solar panels on 63 acres of land at Burnt Ash Farm, off Spinnels Lane,Wix. Tendring Council is also considering two similar proposals for sites in the vicinity, with a third already approved.
Mr Patten said Kinetica Solar’s proposal, which should generate enough electricity to power 3,400 homes, was too intensive. The panels would be screened from passersby by hedgerows, trees and surrounded by an 8ft-tall mesh fence.
Mr Patten said: “There is definitely growing opposition. TheWix area seems to be singled out for all these proposals. It is a rural, traditional farming area.
“Ten per cent of that area is to be covered by glass. People are starting to become increasingly concerned about the eight foot fence, security and cameras.
“I think it is a step too far.”
Wix Parish Council will discuss the plans on January 27 before passing its views on to the district council, which has the final say.
A spokesman for Kinetica said reactions had been generally positive when it held a public exhibition about the scheme last September.
He added: “It should be noted the agricultural use of the site can continue, as the scheme has been designed to allow this, should the landowner so choose.
“The solar farm can be removed and the land easily restored to its existing condition.”
