YOUNGSTERS have been given a tour of the building site which will become their new school campus.

A second £6million campus for St John’s Green primary school, which has been under construction at Abbeyfields since August, will be open in time for the September 2014 term.

Pupils were given a tour of their future classrooms by headteacher Simon Billings and Mark Kendle, of builders Farrans Construction.

The campus will be used to teach Reception and Year 1 pupils in purpose-built classrooms with an outdoor play area attached.

They will then go to the existing school, on St John’s Green, for three years before returning to Circular Road East for their final two years before starting secondary school.

Mr Billings said: “Work seems to be going well. The majority of the infrastructure has been done and they’re starting to put the bricks in soon.

“There’s going to be a central library and ICT area, and the classes will go round that.

“There will also be a sport hall, a kitchen and playing field.

“The children are very excited.

“The Year 4s who visited will be one of the first classes in there.”

The expansion will mean the school will take in three forms a year – 630 pupils in total.

Mr Billings added: “I’m sure the snags will come along, but at the moment it seems to be going to plan. There’s something special about seeing a school built from nothing, to going from a field to a completed building.”
