VANDALS have ruined Coggeshall’s Christmas tree.

Residents reported hearing a disturbance on Market Hill, on Boxing Day, at 3.25am.

They woke to find the tree and lights had been damaged.

Hazel Picknell-Stride, chairman of Coggeshall Chamber of Trade, which organised the tree, said: “They tried to push the Christmas tree over, so they ripped half the lights off and dragged some of them up Church Street.

“They were new lights which had only been there since just before Christmas.

“The electrician said it was dangerous because they were still plugged in so we have had to pull the plug on all the lights because they are damaged.”

Mrs Picknell-Stride, who runs Norman’s Sweet Shop, in Stoneham Street, said the chamber of trade will not be able to afford new lights. She said: “It is a very unkind act, which is disappointing for the community and for visitors who come here to shop and eat out.”

Essex Police are investigating.

A spokesman said: “Police received calls from a member of the public reporting a window had been smashed at a house in Church Street.

“Other properties are understood to be damaged on Market Hill.”
