A SOLDIER denied having illegal guns and ammunition in the back of his car.

Vincent Crockford, 28, pleaded not guilty at Chelmsford Crown Court on Friday to two counts of possessing sawn-off shotguns.

The shotguns, along with a bolt for a heavy machine gun and various ammunition, were found in his car, parked at the Colchester Garrison, and at his Cottonwood Close home in the town, the court was told.

In total, Crockford, who appeared wearing a suit and tie, faces two charges of possessing illegal guns, one of a part of a gun, one of having illegal ammunition and a count of handling stolen goods relating to another shotgun.

He is still subject to an ongoing investigation into possible explosive materials, also allegedly found in his possession, the court heard.

Crockford, of the Parachute Regiment, was remanded in custody until his trial date on February 10.

Any additional charges he may face must be made by January 17.
