A WOMAN has been raped in Colchester.
Detectives are appealing for information after a 42-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in grassland between Chariot Drive, Gryphon Road and Berechurch Road.
The incident occurred at about 8.30pm on Monday.
It was reported to police shortly after 3.30pm yesterday.
The victim, who is from the Colchester area, has spent hours recalling detail from the attack with specially trained police officers.
She is now recovering at home with family and friends.
DI Terry Balding, investigating officer, said: "At this stage, we’re looking to speak with any dog walkers who were in the area between 8pm and 9pm on Monday, bus drivers travelling along the Berechurch Road route and taxi drivers who may have been picking up or dropping off any revellers or commuters.
“If they saw this woman or a man in this 100m grassland area triangle, then we need to hear from them.”
The suspect is described as white, about 5ft 5ins tall, of stocky build, with short, dark-brown hair and is south European-looking.”
Colchester Neighbourhood Policing Insp Barry Atkinson has also issued a warning to festive party goers.
He said: “We would remind people of some basic personal security when out and about late at night.
“If you’re returning from a Christmas party in the town and you live in the suburbs, then our advice is to get a taxi.
“If you live in the town centre, then try to walk as a group when returning home.”
Anyone with information in connection with the incident should contact detectives at Colchester’s Sexual Offences Investigation Team on 101, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 or email SOIT @essex.pnn.police.uk.
