A SUPERMARKET looks set to be demolished to make way for a new Asda store.

Retail giant Asda has reached an agreement to take over the old Co-op food store in Bull Hill Road, Clacton if it can get planning permission to redevelop the site.

Co-op staff would get jobs with the new Asda store if the proposals go ahead.

Asda’s Philip Bartram said: “We are delighted to announce our intention to open a new store in Clacton.

It will include the complete redevelopment of the site and feature a modern Asda store.”

The Co-op admits its store has struggled on the site. East of England Cooperative Society’s Nick Denny said: “Clacton has proved to be a challenging market for us with a number of competitors in the area. We feel the sale to Asda is the best option.

“It will secure a food retail store for the community and maintain jobs in the area.

“Our commitment to our colleagues and to the Clacton community remains strong as we retain two other food stores in the town”

Asda has promised a full public consultation on the plans in the next fewmonths
