DRUNKEN louts have been accused of spoiling the fun for the majority of Colchester’s partygoers by the town’s MP.

Sir Bob Russell joined Colchester police on a Saturday night in the town.

The Lib Dem said the town had been subjected to unfair criticism on the back of Channel 4 documentary Bouncers, which depicted its nightlife as violent and debauched.

He said: “From what I saw, Colchester on a Saturday night is no worse now than when I have been out on previous occasions, but I would like it to be better.

"I was appalled by the behaviour of a small number who give everyone a bad name.

“That’s simply not fair on the majority who are out having a god time.”

Sir Bob was in the town centre from 5pm until 3am and witnessed drunkeness, fights and people urinating in public.

The MP praised what he described as the “thin blue line” of police officers supported by Special Constables and Royal Military Police.

He also paid a visit to the SOS Bus and spoke to Street Pastors.
