A MAN was hauled away in handcuffs and held in a police cell for five hours after he was accused of tampering with price stickers on a turkey joint.

Robert Trickett, 47, was confronted by security guards at a self-service till at Morrisons in Little Clacton.

They accused him of putting a £4.50 discounted price tag on a turkey joint.

Mr Trickett said: “I only went in for a few bits and spotted the turkey joint on discount.

"I love a bargain and try to eat healthily so thought I’d snap it up.

“The scanner beeped at me and an assistant said there was a problem with the label and went off.

“She came back with a security guard and he said I had changed the label.

“I told him I had done no such thing and to go away and check his CCTV.”

About 15 minutes later the shop assistant came back and told Mr Trickett has was banned from the store and asked for his name.

He refused to give his name and staff called the police.

Mr Trickett, of Bentley Avenue, Jaywick, said: “I was carted off to the police station and put in a cell for five-and-a-half hours.

“No CCTV turned up and after being interviewed I was released with no further action.”

He is angry he has not received an apology from Morrisons, but said he will not shop at the store again.

He said: “I have done nothing wrong, but I was ashamed and humiliated as they took me out of the store in handcuffs.”
