Essex University staff to go on strike
12:58pm Tuesday 29th October 2013 in News
STUDENTS face major disruption on Thursday after lecturers and staff from three unions voted to strike over pay.
Staff from three unions – the University and College Union (UCU), UNISON, and Unite the Union – will join a national day of walk outs.
Academics, lecturers, researchers will join non-academic staff on the picket line at the Colchester, Southend and East 15 campuses after refusing to accept a 1 per cent pay rise.
UCU Essex branch president Randy Banks said union negotiators wanted wages to rise in line with the retail price index, currently 2.5 per cent, plus “catch-up” pay.
Seminars and lectures are likely to be axed, although university chiefs insisted students should attend as normal.
