Fish and chips treat at the Alternative Oyster Feast
6:00pm Monday 28th October 2013 in News
FISH and chips were on the menu for 140 guests at the Alternative Oyster Feast.
The annual event, in its 34th year, is run by trade unionists and the Colchester Labour Party to provide a meal for pensioners from the town.
As well as a meal the event, held at The Arena, Circular Road East, also saw musical entertainment, bingo and a raffle.
Dave Harris, one of the organisers, said: “Our event is not a criticism of the Oyster Feast itself which is steeped in tradition.
“It began after a debate in austere times about how much the Oyster Feast was costing, although it is paid for by the great and the good who can afford the tickets, so a couple of trade unionists and the Labour group set up the alternative.
“There are pensioners in the area who perhaps don’t get out as often as they would like, and one lady told me today she had not been out since the Alternative Oyster Feast last year.
“People were dancing in the aisles and had a brilliant time.”
