Part-night street lighting plans delayed by a fortnight
4:10pm Monday 28th October 2013 in News
THE scheme which will see the majority of street lights in Colchester switched off overnight has been delayed by two weeks.
Part-night lighting was due to begin on Friday, but plans have been put back until Monday, November 18, in order to let residents and community representatives see Essex County Council’s final plans.
Details of which lights will be switched off will now be published on Friday.
Rodney Bass, cabinet member for Highways, said: “We have pushed back the start date for part-night lighting in Basildon and Colchester by two weeks, to give residents and local councillors the opportunity to view the plans before they go live.
“The consultation period gave local councillors and the emergency services the opportunity to put forward areas which they believe meet the exemption criteria, and we are considering all responses received.”
Town centres, busy road junctions and in areas of high crime are all exempt from the plans, which will see street lights turned off between midnight and 5am each morning.
