Fears of more flash floods if drains aren't cleared
5:50am Monday 28th October 2013 in News
TRADERS whose shops were damaged in a flash flood fear it could happen again unless Halstead’s drains are cleared.
Krazy Kutz barbershop was one of the worst affected when a deluge fell on Sunday.
Owner Zest Firat says it will cost hundreds of pounds to repair damaged flooring.
He said: “The drains got full and the water came into the shop.
“I wasn’t in the shop but one of my customers phoned me, I rushed down from Hedingham.
“People were trying to drive past and it was making it worse.
“It just happened so quickly.”
Vicky Botwright, who owns His n Hers in Bridge Street, said the water had only made it as far as her front door mat.
She said: “It also happened last year when we had heavy rain. Something needs to be done.
“On Sunday it didn’t rain for that long and if we end up having a lot of rain it could be a lot worse.”
Andrew Callaghan, who manages the Meat Inn, in the High Street, took a picture of Sunday’s flooding.
He said: “Because it was just rain water, not the river bursting its banks, we were surprised how much water there was.”
We asked Anglian Water and Essex County Council about the drainage in Halstead, but neither provided a response.
