Community group takes a chance on making Abbots viable in one year
8:00am Wednesday 23rd October 2013 in News
A COMMUNITY organisation is to take over the doomed Abbots Activity Centre - for one year only.
A decision to close the Ladbrook Drive centre was made last month in a bid to save Colchester Council £74,000 a year.
But now the Community Halls in Partnership has agreed to take over the centre on a 12-month lease and run it as a community hall, which means it will no longer be exclusively used by older people.
The partnership, which also runs The Hythe Community Centre, The Oaktree Centre, in Harwich Road, the Old Heath Community Centre and Forest Road Meeting Hall, in Greenstead, will keep Abbots open, to be used for events such as dance classes, training days or after school clubs.
Despite the takeover, the centre, which has 255 members, will still shut on Friday.
It will remain closed until the final details of an 12-month lease are ironed out by lawyers acting for Colchester Council and the partnership.
