Colchester Council in talks to save Abbots Activity Centre for community use
NEGOTIATIONS are underway for a new community use for a doomed activity centre.
Colchester Council is shutting Abbots Activity Centre to save an annual subsidy of £74,000.
It says harsh cuts in grants and the tough economic environment makes the funding impossible.
However, the decision has been strongly criticised by opposition councillors and the elderly and disabled members who use the centre in Ladbrook Drive.
Now Colchester Council leader Anne Turrell has revealed discussions are being held in a bid to secure a new community use for the centre.
She added: “We are almost at the point where we have a way forward for community use for the site.
“We need to sign some legal documents but it is fair to say we are in discussions now.”
The revealation came as Will Quince, leader of the opposition Conservative group, tabled a motion calling on the council to promise to keep the centre for community use.
