Bone marrow donor event hailed a success
2:37pm Friday 4th October 2013 in News
HUNDREDS of Colcestrians have successfully been signed onto the bone marrow donor register.
Charity Anthony Nolan held an event in Castle Park last month to attract more donors.
It was arranged with the family of Colchester man Rob George, 21, who suffers from leukaemia and needs a bone marrow transplant.
A spokesman for Anthony Nolan, which organises the register, said the event had been a great success.
On the day 250 people gave their details and spat into a tube to make sure they could be called upon to donate.
A further 150 completed an online form at the event, with the testing kit sent to them in the post.
None of the 400 people have yet been called upon to donate their bone marrow.
The spokesman said: “Given the relatively short time since the event, which we are really pleased to hear was well attended, as yet no-one has been called up to donate.
“One never knows when they will be, however, so it is worth restating that they have made a vital contribution to helping save lives simply by putting themselves forward.
“It really is a selfless and intrinsically worthwhile act.”
