Former Colchester cyclist to cross America on a bike
10:00am Friday 27th September 2013 in News
A FORMER West Bergholt cyclist is getting ready to ride across America for charity.
Chris Bloomfield, 27, will take to the saddle and travel from New York to Los Angeles.
He is planning to cycle 66 miles for 66 days taking in some of the famous Route 66 to raise £20,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society and Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital.
He said: “I was born in Colchester and grew up in West Bergholt before moving to Bristol for University.
“I used to cycle with teams in the town but only got back into it recently.
“Next week I am heading off for the challenge of a lifetime.”
Chris is supporting the Alzheimer’s Society because his grandfather suffered from the illness.
He said: “I am making myself vulnerable and will be out on my own.
“All charities are great but these two mean a lot.
“My mum and cousin were cared for in Great Ormond Street with problems Colchester could not deal with.
“They were excellent.”
So insurance underwriter Chris got into training to get ready for the 3,500 mile trip.
He said: “It is not going to be easy but it is not supposed to be and it will all be worthwhile if I can help the charities.”
He has already raised several thousands of pounds but is looking for businesses to sponsor bricks in a corporate wall to help build something up and help those who need it.
“For 18 months I have been training and am cycling 350 miles a week.
“Everyone was inspired by all the cycling success recently and the idea just came to me.”
Chris is taking an unpaid break from work to take up the challenge and paying for everything himself so all the money donated goes towards the charities.
