One in three council tenants in Colchester affected by the bedroom tax has fallen behind on rent payments.
Figures obtained by campaign group False Economy show 36 per cent of tenants affected by the cut have been pushed into debt.
In April, the Government cut housing benefit by up to 25 per cent for tenants with one of more spare bedrooms.
In Colchester, a total of 459 households were affected by the change, and of those 165 are now in debt.
