Shoplifter caught again a day after court appearance
2:00pm Wednesday 18th September 2013 in News
A PROLIFIC thief has been jailed after he stole from a shop less than 24 hours after a court appearance.
Benjamin Maslin, 31, was given a suspended prison sentence when he appeared at Colchester Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
However at 10am on Saturday he was spotted by security staff stealing four bottles of perfume worth £144.50 from the Boots store in Clacton, and was arrested three minutes later.
Maslin, of Beech Road, Clacton, admitted the offence at court on Monday.
Emma Howson, prosecuting, told magistrates Maslin had 43 previous convictions for 101 offences, including 41 of theft.
Paul Markham, mitigating, said Maslin was a man who had struggled with class A drug addiction for some time and had been left with little support after he was last released from prison.
Magistrates activated the six week suspended sentence and ordered him to serve a further eight weeks for the latest offence.
Alan Hayman, chairman of the bench, said: “Our colleagues gave you a chance and you threw it away.
“We hope that will be long enough for replacement drugs to have effect.”
