10:50am Wednesday 18th September 2013 in News
ROBBERS punched a woman in the face before snatching her handbag in Clacton.
The woman, who is in her 40s and from the town, was attacked in an alleyway off London Road, near Chantry Close, at about 6.30pm on Sunday.
She was approached from behind by two men or youths who attempted to snatch her bag.
When the woman tried to hold on to the bag she fell to the ground and was kicked in the back and punched in the face.
The thieves then fled with the distinctive black and red shoulder bag, a grey purse containing about £20 in cash, a bank card and personal documents.
Det Sgt Tim Coyles, from Clacton CID, said: "The thieves used quite a shocking level of violence against the woman and the assault continued while she was defenceless on the ground.
"She was taken to Colchester General Hospital and had treatment to a cut on her head and various bruising and swellings.
"We want to hear from anyone who saw the assault, anyone who has seen the bag or purse or anyone who can identify the two thieves.”
Both of the attackers were white, but as their faces were cover their ages are not known.
One was described as being taller and was wearing a grey hooded top and grey tracksuit bottoms. The other was wearing a dark-coloured hooded top.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Det Sgt Coyles or Det Con Annalise Redden, at Clacton police station, on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
