Highways boss rules out full traffic ban on Colchester High Street
8:00pm Tuesday 17th September 2013 in News
ESSEX’S new highways chief has ruled out making any moves to pedestrianise Colchester’s High Street.
Rodney Bass became Essex County Council’s highways and transport portfolio holder just a month after a long-awaited trial car ban on Colchester High Street was shelved after just 36 days.
County Hall officers are now working towards reintroducing a handful of the Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) next month.
In an exclusive interview, Mr Bass revealed a public consultation on wider reforms, which could also include changes to the North Station roundabout area, would be launched in the New Year.
But he said he had no plans to ban traffic from Colchester High Street outright - a measure successive administrations have considered and failed to implement since the 1960s.
