Social club gets refurb thanks to Layer Road cash

A COMMUNITY centre has received a head to toe makeover using cash handed over by the developers of Colchester United’s former ground.
Shrub End Social Centre, in Shrub End Road, will be relaunched later this month after closing for 10 weeks while a £68,000 refurbishment was carried out.
The funds came from the developers building homes on the former Layer Road football ground as part of a planning agreement with Colchester Council.
The hall, committee room, stage, kitchen and bar have been redecorated, while the toilets have been completely overhauled with baby changing facilities added.
A new energy efficient boiler has been installed while rotting wood has been replaced and non-slip flooring added.
Groups which will benefit include three dance clubs, a diet and exercise class, the Shrub End Townswomen’s Guild, RSPB and the St Raphael Club.
Colchester MP Sir Bob Russell will cut the ribbon to reopen the centre at a ceremony on Thursday, September 26.
