Lightning strike risk ends memorial plan
FEARS of a bolt of lightning have scuppered plans to create a church memorial to a pillar of the community.
The Dedham Vale Society had wanted to put a flagpole on the top of Langham Church as a tribute to its late chairman Wilf Tolhurst.
However, after five years of planning, the scheme has collapsed because the Chelmsford diocese says it is a condition of its insurance to protect against lightning - described by insurers as an Act of God.
A spokesman for the Diocese of Chelmsford said: “Chelmsford Diocese does not object to the installation of a flagpole on Langham church.
“However, the church is bound by law to comply with a condition of its insurance."
