Man ties himself to fence
8:00pm Monday 2nd September 2013 in News
A CAMPAIGNING resident tied himself to his fence to stop a new one from blocking his gate.
Dave Smith, 54, of Speedwell Road, Colchester, launched the one-man protest to stop contractors working for the Ministry of Defence from blocking off the access from the back of his home to the Middlewick firing ranges.
He said: “On August 16 they put a letter through the door and on August 27 they started putting the fence up.
“I have been using this for 28 years and my solicitor said this gives me rights so I appealed.
“I thought they were listening because they left me out but then I saw them start to block it off so I put my arm out to stop them.
“I am on my property and they will have to assault me to get me off.”
The contractors were left frustrated while the Royal Military Police and then Essex Police were called when the stand-off entered a fourth hour.
Sgt Rob Temme explained: “We are here for conflict reduction and to prevent a breach of the peace.
“I told the contractors to come back later and do it and if he wants to complain there are legal channels.
“Clearly he is on his own land and we have told all parties to avoid confrontation.”
