Road collapses under van
4:26pm Thursday 29th August 2013 in News
A DRIVER was left temporarily stranded after a road collapsed underneath his van.
Jason Hulstrom, of Straight Road, Colchester, was driving along Church Road in Little Bentley when he noticed an overflowing drain.
He said: “All of a sudden the road just dropped and the van went through the road.
“It was just so weird. It was bizarre.”
Mr Hulstrom, who had been driving home from a delivery in Ipswich with his colleague David Green, said that by the time police officers arrived about half an hour later the hole was about 5ft deep.
He said: “It seemed like the van was getting deeper and deeper.
“It was absolutely mad.”
A local farmer came to their rescue and used one of his tractors to drag the van out of the hole.
It is believed a burst main under the road caused the flood.
The pair were able to drive the van home from the scene. The road will be closed until Saturday.
