Farmers help councillors deal with travellers
5:24pm Wednesday 28th August 2013 in News
FARMERS helped secure vulnerable land in West Mersea after travellers moved onto a car park.
Ten families moved onto the Willoughby Avenue car park on Saturday, at the peak of the town’s regatta celebrations.
The move prompted fears gypsy families would also occupy other sites in West Mersea, with the first set of travellers a scouting party for a larger group.
In a bid to protect at risk land town councillors called on farmers to block off sites, including the Glebe sports ground, with heavy machinery.
Following long negotiations throughout Sunday between the travellers and town councillors, the families moved on late that evening.
