Building equipment torched in arson attack
5:00pm Tuesday 20th August 2013 in News
THOUSANDS of pounds worth of building equipment was ruined following a suspected arson attack on a container in Brightlingsea.
Firefighters from Brightlingsea and Clacton were called to a builder’s yard off Robinson Road at about 8pm on Sunday.
They were able to put out the flames, after residents from miles around reported seeing smoke, in about an hour and the fire is being treated as deliberate.
Owner Carl Barnard said: “I am devastated. The first thing I knew about it was when I got a call from my brother who said the containers were on fire.”
One was destroyed and another, with tools and a gas cylinder inside, damaged but the fire was stopped before it spread to homes just metres away.
Mr Barnard, of Barnard Contracts, said: “There was at least several thousands of pounds worth of stuff in there including more than a thousand pounds in barrier systems which melted.
“I think it was kids because I can’t think of anyone who would do this but I am devastated at losing all that stock.”
Sister-in-law Amy Barnard lives next door to the yard with her family.
She added: “It is definitely a relief the house was saved and the smoke was going the other way.
“We didn’t know anything about it until someone knocked on the door.
“It was quite scary and a major fire.”
The containers, about six metres by four metres, were on the edge of a field owned by the family which used to be farmed for corn.
Mr Barnard said: “There used to be fires each year because it was so dry and I am glad they saved the other container.”
