'Funeral' marks opening of Waiting Room arts venue
A BREATH of fresh air was brought to the former bus station waiting room - with a funeral.
The space at the old Colchester bus station, in Queen Street, has been converted into a new community space which opened on Friday.
Aptly called The Waiting Room, the venue will act as an art gallery and hub, library and shop, cafe bar and kitchen.
The Colchester School of Art in partnership with The Creative Co-op will run the site, which has been funded by Colchester Council, the Arts Council England, and various other grant bodies.
A funeral procession marked the official opening with satirical performance art piece Sarcophagus: September 2008 from Hadleigh artist Peter Johnson.
The coffin arrived by hearse and will lie open for the wake in the Waiting Room for the next six weeks. It contains a skeleton surrounded by the items left over as “relics” from the financial crash in 2008, including a Financial Times front page declaring the fall of Lehman Brothers, an empty champagne bottle and credit cards.
