Officers were contacted at around 12.45am on Sunday after a woman was behaving erratically at Yates bar in Head Street.

The women range in age from 19 to 22.

One of the women was taken to Colchester General Hospital but has since been discharged.

A 44-year-old man from London was arrested in connection with the investigation. He remains in police custody.

Detective Inspector Neil Pudney said: "I would urge anyone who is worried that they may have consumed an unknown substance to seek medical treatment as soon as possible.

"I would also like to hear from anyone who began to feel unwell after their evening out or who was behaving in a way that would indicate they have consumed more than just alcohol.

"I would also ask anyone who saw anything suspicious that night to get in contact with us – whether it was someone having their drink spiked or people exhibiting strange and erratic behaviour.”
