Colchester: Residents' ‘No’ to development plan

Defiant protesters made a stand against homes plans for a town centre site.

More than 71 residents waved Trees not Tarmac placards as they gathered at the roadside to fight proposals for 120 properties to go up in a field east of Colchester Leisure World.

Developer Persimmon Homes was granted planning permission on appeal last month and it now appears virtually certain the scheme will go ahead.

Green Party spokesman Peter Lynn - one of the organisers - acknowledged yesterday's demonstration was unlikely to halt the development.
