THE leader of Colchester Council’s Liberal Democrat group has stepped down after 15 months.

Paul Smith, ward councillor for St John’s, said he made the decision himself and was unanimously backed by his fellow Lib Dems on the council.

His decision was backed at a meeting on Saturday.

The new group leader will be Nick Barlow, who has represented Castle ward in the town since 2007.

Mr Smith said: “In the past 15 months, as liberal democrat group leader, I have gained valuable insights and learnt a lot.
“It is only right that councillor Nick Barlow should be given the same opportunity.
“Nick has the unanimous support of our group in the year ahead. I am delighted that during my tenure the Colchester liberal democrat group has won two national awards from the Local Government Association, recognising our achievements in efficiency and promoting employment.”

Mr Smith, who is also council cabinet member for business and resources, took over the role from Martin Hunt.
