Snow gridlocks roads Snow gridlocks roads

BLIZZARDS have caused traffic chaos in Colchester.

Drivers were faced with gridlock on Tuesday morning after snow fell overnight.

Many faced problems getting to work, with roads linking up to the A12 the worst hit for traffic.

Ipswich Road, Clingoe Hill and Hythe Hill were all badly affected.

A four vehicle accident on the A12 at the Kelvedon Bypass, heading towards Colchester, caused major delays at just after 8am.

The northbound exit slip road at the Ardleigh Crown was closed around 8.45am because of an accident.

Delays hampered drivers on Lexden Road, Colchester, following another accident there at around 8.30am.

Police said there had been a number of minor shunts and bumps and asked motorists to take care.

No schools were reported to be closed.

Dear madam in the SUV . The main road is slushy , that means its all melted and not icey, please if you're so nervous of driving in the snow , pull over to the side , let the dozens of cars now stuck behind you go pass and then carry on driving at 12mph in a 30mph. Please feel free to pass on to to all the other nervous norrises. If you cant drive in snow , then don't ,you cause the back ups.

Well said mirokou. I am one of those drivers who do not like to drive in the snow ......so I don't.
Fog, rain, dark not bothered by, but snow makes me a nervous driver so I do not drive in it.
Why hold sensible drivers up if your journey is not important. Kids can go in late to school, shopping can wait and I don't need to go out and be a nuisance to buy a newspaper.

Ahhh a sensible person, I must admit I actually enjoy driving in the snow, but I resist from driving in it without good reason because of the many people that don't seem to know how to adjust their driving for the conditions, give me an empty snow covered road any day :) lol

was woke in the night by snow hitting my window hard enough to wake me.
I had to take my wife to my daughters in the other side of town before 9am, through some side roads with compounded snow being slippery to drive or walk on, but was in deep drifts in places.
most of the year my old 4X4 just trundles along all in its own little world, but today, it comes alive in a world of its own.
It just makes me smile when much newer Hi end cars cannot manage to pull away, let alone drive of safely due to wheelspin.

Owning a cheapo front wheel drive car I feel much the same way; rest of the year I get people in powerful German cars tailgating me and cutting me up, yet in this weather I get to carefully but comfortably overtake on the railway bridge them watching them move nowhere as there real wheels just spin (when on foot I have helped people push those cars up the hill though, even though I am of the opinion that if you/your car can't handle the weather don't go out in it).

And fair enough if it did come down heavily over night - it was quite heavy during the day, blowing sideways, but I wouldn't have compared that to an actual blizzard.

I was, with my collegues coming of the night shift, at 0600 the roads leading away from the North Station area, were a nightmare, almost just two ruts in the snow where another few cars had been, no sign of any gritters having been on Turner Road, Ipswich Road, Mill Road, A120 was just about 1 lane from Ardleigh towards Harwich, but thsi did not stop Artics hurtling down the outside lane! the cars that kept on the inside lane where the road was clearer could do no more than 30mph, would hate to think what would have happened of those lorries had to brake quickly! Good to see the trains were all on time mostly though.

wormshero... it was most of the night, and right up to about 0500! from where we worked, we could not see more than about 80 to 100 yards

mirokou.... this may come as a surprise, but slush is made of ice, soft ice, brake hard, and you will end up the worse off without fail, 12mph maybe a bitr slow, but certainly NO more than 20mph, many reckless do though, and odd how those who drive 4x4's think it dioes not affect them !
