Animals rights group's campaign against school pig scheme

ANIMAL rights protestors have bombarded a primary school with objection emails over its scheme to rear pigs.

Colchester Animal Defenders has sent more than 400 emails to Peasenhall Primary School in Suffolk.

The group is opposing the school allowing its 25 pupils to raise three pigs before they are sent to be slaughtered for their meat.

A spokesman for Peasenhall Primary School said some of the emails were "foul and abusive".

Liza Moore, head of Colchester Animal Defenders, defended the vocal campaign.

This is the same campaign group who have posted about stickers stuck onto someone's gate means that their dogs will be stolen and used in dog fighting.

Clueless isn't the word.

Several primary schools and nursery schools right here in Colchester have similar schemes hatching out chicks from eggs and seeing them grow for a few weeks. Then they are returned to the normal chicken processing chain, but of course the children are not told that.
So why don't "Colchester Animal Defenders" take care of their own patch, instead of bothering Peasenhall primary school?

This is a sad and rather poignant story, showing clearly, as it does, that some people simply do not want children to know where food comes from, what it actually is and the real value of things like farm welfare standards and health issues surrounding meat products.

OK, we get it that some people do not eat meat on ethical grounds. They have that right, but why try and deny others, their legitimate dietary choices?

personally I think the idea - that of a limited amount of controlled and well supervised livestock production in schools - is a truly wonderful one and only wish it could be rolled out more widely in schools.

Urbanites often lack a sense of perspective in respect of food production and origins, not because of any personal shortcomings on their part, but simply because they have never been exposed to (or involved with) any of the process; particularly that involved in agricultural livestock production.

The idea that an animal can be kept for reasons other than its being a pet are alien to many adults, yet they still eat meat. learning to appreciate, care for and understand animals raised purely for the table is as important an area of the curriculum as many other aspects of modern day living.

As for the emails that were sent, those that were foul and abusive should (and can) be traced to the sender and that/those person(s) be made the subject of some kind of sanction. I mean really! People sending foul and abusive emails to a primary school?

Are we the all members of the sort of society that thinks this is acceptable?

Last line should say - Are we all members of the sort of society ... etc.

I agree wholeheartedly with sandgronun64.

Everyone needs the ability to choose in life and part of education is showing children all sides of life. This is a part of our life, we produce animals to eat.

Coming from a farming background I do feel very strongly that all aspects of how we get our food is fairly represented.

It's a fantastic idea, and I'm sure the pigs will have a happy life.

Colchester Animal Defenders are similarly associated with the idiots who released mink into the wild, causing untold damage to the natural fauna that has taken years to repair.
Grow up people and turn your attention to the breeders of fighting dogs!

It appears that Ms Liza Moore (aka Liza Isa Vegan on 'facebook' site of Colchester Animal Defenders) is denying ANYONE the right to eat meat. Or even to understand at a young age where meat actually comes from.

Apart from being incorrect in her own assumptions regarding what constitutes a healthy diet, she has contrived to create problems for a village Primary School and its staff which has culminated in staff being threatened and abused.

For someone of her years to act so irresponsibly and to entice people to harrass staff (and possibly pupils also) should become a Police matter.

I hope she is prosecuted for her threatening behaviour, which is a criminal offence.
