Plans backed for new Colchester housing estate
3:00pm Wednesday 6th March 2013 in News
PLANS to build a new housing estate in Colchester have been marked for approval.
Developer Lands Improvement wants to build more than 200 homes on the site of the former Betts factory site, in Ipswich Road.
The site is unique because it lies partly in Colchester and partly in Tendring, so an application has been submitted to each authority.
Land in Colchester will be used to build up to 128 homes, while there will be 73 in Tendring.
Colchester officers recommend granting permission in principle to build the homes, which would be up to three-storeys, and a 65-bedroom residential care home.
Officers also recommend full planning permission should be given to completely demolish the existing factory and build a bus turning area and a main estate entrance.
An agreement brokered between Colchester Council and the developer means 20 per cent of homes would have to be set aside as affordable housing.
Colchester Council is set to decide on the application next Thursday, March 14, while the Tendring application is set to go to planning committee on March 27.
