Memorial to aircrew is finally unveiled... 69 years after crash
TWO men who watched a plane crash in north Colchester nearly 70 years ago will next month unveil a memorial in memory of its crew.
At 4am on April 25, 1944, teenager David Seaborn watched a Lancaster bomber crash as it attempted an emergency landing at Boxted Airfield after coming under fire.
The memory remained vivid in his imagination, and more than 65 years later he told the story to a group of history enthusiasts who regularly meet up in a caravan in Great Horkesley.
The friends were so moved they decided to create a memorial dedicated to the four Brits and three Canadians who were killed either in the attack or the crash.
After two years of work, Mr Seaborn and Michael Heath, who also saw the plane’s last moments, will next month unveil a monument on Ipswich Road, where the tail section landed.
