COLCHESTER MP Sir Bob Russell has objected to plans to build a fast-food takeaway on the edge of the town.

KFC wants to build the controversial drive-thru in Ipswich Road, beside the historic Lion and Lam cottage, but Sir Bob has raised concerns the development could be dangerous for motorists.

In a letter to Tendring District Council, which will decide on the application, Sir Bob said: “To have a drive-thru takeaway adjacent to junctions along a busy road close to the main Ardleigh Crown interchange serving the A12 and A120 would present a danger to road users.

“This location is inappropriate.

“The clear intention is that it would cater for road generated customers leading to an increase in traffic along an already busy road.”

Residents have also objected to the plans, saying the restaurant’s long opening hours, between 6am and 12am, would impact their quality of life and would increase the amount of litter along the road.

The application, which would create up to 34 jobs, is due to be considered before April.
