ITEMS belonging to a heroic Antarctic explorer are to go under the hammer.

Military belts, once worn by Captain Lawrence Oates, are expected to fetch around £700 at Colchester's Reeman Dansie auction on Friday.

Captain Oates, who hailed from Gestingthorpe, near Halstead, is best known for his tragic expedition to the South Pole, in 1912, when he famously declared his self-sacrifice with the words: “I am just going outside and may be some time.”

But this auction should help expand upon his life in the British Army cavalry, where he proved equally as heroic.
