Lock it or lose it burglary campaign launched

A NEW campaign has been launched to try and stop student homes being burgled.

During the past few months students have been specifically targeted by criminals in Colchester.

In response Essex Police joined forced with the student union at Essex University to start the lock it or lose it campaign.

It is aimed at students who live on and off campus in student housing and offers advice on how to reduce the risk of house burglaries.

A short web film has been created to support the campaign.

When I was a student, many moons ago, my most expensive possession was a knackered old stereo and an even more knackered guitar. Now, students will have laptops, I-phones, games consoles. All the stuff which can be sold on quickly.

It´s a harsh introduction to the real world, when all you want is to study and have a good time, but there will be people out there who know which ones are the student houses and will view them as easy pickings.

Another side of the coin is also this: if somebody offers you a cheap item in the pub, there´s a fair chance it will be knocked off.

I would say to students to make sure locks are good, that there´s no easy access to get in. Don´t wander the streets publicly showing expensive kit. Back up anything on your laptop or other devices which is critical, and keep it backed up regularly.

Get insured and make sure it´s good insurance. If you´re not happy with the security, speak to your landlord and get it beefed up. And don´t forget that the thieves might not always be non-students: take care who you invite into your house or room. Get to know your neighbours, so they also spot anybody hanging around who shouldn´t be.

Part of the growing up process is moving out of the family nest, but it does mean being aware of possible dangers.

I was lucky enough never to be burgled or mugged, but that´s perhaps because I looked like a mugger myself!
