Abbots scheme - back to square one

A BID to save a threatened activity centre is starting from scratch.
Colchester Council declared its intention to close Abbots Activity Centre in July 2011 in the hopes of saving nearly £70,000 of subsidy.
But the announcement created a furore from pensioners and the disabled who said the centre was their lifeline.

Now Colchester Council is putting up £105,000 in funding over three years to cover start-up costs and support the project in the early days.
It has asked for new expressions of interest and hopes to have the issue resolved by June.
However, the protracted process has been criticised by Conservative councillor and former Colchester mayor Sonia Lewis.
