In today's Gazette: Campaigners have won their fight to stop a visitor centre being built in the heart of Constable Country.

Plans for the multi-million pound Stour Valley Visitor Centre were rejected by Colchester councillors during a dramatic four hour meeting attended by 350 people.

* A disabled man who rescued a semi-conscious neighbour from a flat fire has been honoured for his heroism.

Christopher Hart, 69, was hailed a hero after hauling Brian McCue to safety from his Colchester home.

* A man stole who thousands of pounds from his frail neighbour has avoided a jail sentence.

Carlos Machado, 55, was supposed to be caring for cancer patient Brian Farlow, of Hatfield Road, Witham, but took money from his bank account.

* A block of flats in Colchester was evacuated after fire broke out.

Firefighters made their way into Calver House in Artillery Street to extinguish the blaze. Investigations are now underway to establish the cause of the fire.
