Colchester's Republic saved

A HIGH street retailer has been saved from closing.

Fashion chain Republic, which has a store in Colchester, was on Thursday bought by Sports Direct.

The sports company has saved the 25 jobs under threat at the shop, in Culver Square.

Derek Ashbee, Culver Square manager, said he was please for staff.

He said: “It’s good news for them, it must be good for morale to know their jobs are safe.

“We were ever hopeful Republic would be saved but obviously not certain.

“Colchester was trading particularly well in relation to the rest of the units."

Republic stores in Chelmsford, Braintree, Basildon and Southend have also been salvaged in the buy out.
