In today's Gazette: Park and Ride fee shocker

In today's Gazette: A ticket for Colchester's park and ride could cost as much as £3 per person, it has been revealed.

Council officers say the pricing strategy is aimed at encouraging single passenger commuters to get off the roads.

* Peter Ballisat had to give up his dream of joining the Army - because at 6 ft 8 ins he is too tall to fit inside a tank.

Peter, of Halstead, achieved top grades in his application process but is now forging a career in the fire service after his lofty ambitions were thwarted.

* Serious failings in care contributed to a patient's death after a routine operation, a coroner has ruled.

David Pattrick, 69, of Goldman's Lane, Marks Tey, died after undergoing a gall bladder operation. Essex coroner Caroline Beasley-Murray said there had been serious failings in his care.

* Tory MP Bernard Jenkin has written a stinging letter of objection against the Horkesley Park development on the eve of the landmark decision.

The application for the Stour Valley Visitor Centre will be discussed by Colchester councillors tonight. Stay informed by logging on to the Gazette website.

Chelmsford and Ipswich P&R are currently £2.50 so by the time ours is ready they will probably have been increased to £3.00 as well. As it is aimed at " encouraging single passenger commuters to get off the roads " then I guess a group ticket will be available for a fiver.

£3 per person? The car park above Wilkinsons is £3.50 per day, it's more convenient to park in town, surely this defeats the object?
Colchester Borough Council are becoming a laughing matter! What is stopping people parking along Layer Road and walking? I walk from St. Michaels and its free!

So, is MP Mr jenkins for or against Bathside Bay, if it ever gets built, as a previously published story on bathside bay may be "compromised"if Horkesley Park goes ahead?

1: the would COULD is important here.

2: £3 really is not that much.

3: yes, some car parks in town are £3.50 all day, but they have limited availability and are not so conviently located for our of town folks.

4: if the gazette had not worded things so negatively, no one would think this is bad.

This has now sadly become typical of the Gazette in writing council stories - either Essex or Colchester. Using the word 'Shocker' in the headline has no basis in fact except in the warped mind of the headline writer who has clearly been told to write an anti-council angle. £3 is cheap.

That's a special offer, also at Middleborough. All day normally £10 and £6 at Middleborough

Cambridge has the best park and ride service in the eastern counties, and at present they charge £2.50 per adult. Each adult can take 3 children aged 5 to 16 for free. Children under 5 travel free. OAPs travel free. Parking is free. If pricing is right, P and R can be a success.
