PUPILS saw the benefits of becoming an apprentice at a school roadshow.

Students at Alderman Blaxill School, took part in the Discover your Future event run by Essex County Council.

The roadshow is visiting 23 schools across the county throughout February and March highlighting opportunities available, giving current case studies and answering questions.

What happened to metalwork and technical drawing in schools? This country needs engineers and schools used to provide them. What happened? This country needs manufacturers to make the stuff that we now have to import. What happened to our manufacturers? Apprenticeships are the way to build our manufacturing base up again yet where are the incentives for entrepreneurs? We build thousands of new houses but no business units. Why is that?

Wellnow is right, Thatcher happened, and it was she and her policies that destroyed so much of British industry.

In the Thatcher days people were encouraged to work hard, be successful, set up their own businesses and own their own homes. The reason people are discouraged from working now is because it's easier to claim benefits and youngsters aren't prepared to get off their backsides, train up, learn a trade or profession and then earn decent money when they have the requisite skills. They expect it all to land in their pockets for nothing. That's Labour for you.

The unions destroyed our major industries, regrettably. Thatcher dealt with the unions and the aftermath was a void caused by big business going overseas. Bob Crowe is a dinosaur that survived this, latched onto the closest thing to a nationalised industry, the railways. He is to be feared as he can still bring this country to its knees and probably will, when the time is judged to be right. But we need to get on with building our manufacturing industries and bringing jobs and self-respect back to the British people. I don't employ apprentices as I am not setup for it. The bureaucracy is ridiculous. I do, however, employ young people.
